Baptismal Tree for the Church of St. Lawrence in Lohja

“Collaborating with Annastiina on the baptismal tree project was smooth and rewarding. Annastiina’s vision and ability to weave the visual language and color palette of the medieval church into a contemporary baptismal tree was outstanding. The project progressed on schedule and as agreed.”

Piia Korpijaakko

The baptismal tree I designed was dedicated and blessed on October 4, 2026, during the Michaelmas celebratory service at the Church of St. Lawrence in Lohja.

The design and creation of the baptismal tree was a thorough and thoughtful journey, involving reviews and statements from both the parish regional council and the Finnish Heritage Agency. The design process began in early 2026, and by September, a metalsmith based in Raseborg brought the piece to life.

My goal was to create a piece that feels both inherently beautiful and a natural part of a church interior that is exceptionally well-preserved and of great cultural-historical significance. Given our location in Lohja, I was commissioned to create an apple tree-themed Baptismal Tree. I did not want apples hanging from the tree, as they are often associated with the symbolism of original sin. Instead, I envisioned a blooming apple tree, where each baptized child or youth is represented by a single, delicate flower—becoming part of the parish’s greater whole. The color palette echoes the serene grey-green of the pulpit, while the brass hues of the blossoms draw inspiration from the chandeliers that illuminate the nave. The shape of the petals can also be traced back to details on the pulpit, and the winding form of the tree itself reflects the flowing vine motifs that grace the sanctuary walls.

My sincere hope is that the baptismal tree is warmly received and will serve the families of Lohja for centuries to come. I hope it becomes a beloved symbol for the community, celebrating the wonder of new life.
